Introduction to DVD

The statistics concerning rape and violent crimes against women in South Africa are staggering. Analysis of the SA Police Services Annual Crime Statistics Report for 2004/5 indicates that a woman is raped every 10 minutes, one is beaten up every four minutes and seven women are murdered, on average, every day.

Based on Institute for Security studies, one out of every three women in this country will be a raped or suffer a violent crime. Moreover, one out of every two women suffers domestic violence according to the Centre for Study of Violence and Reconciliation.

Dieter Marzinger, one of South Africa’s top martial arts exponents and a former trainer of the South African Special Forces Regiment in hand-to-hand combat, says that expecting the statistics to drop to acceptable levels soon is unrealistic. “Living in fear that you might become a victim is equally unacceptable and preparing yourself to overcome a violent attack is a necessity,” he points out.

With this in mind, Dieter has provided the intellectual content for a DVD entitled ‘10SECONDS’. In his narration on the DVD he gives women the confidence to react in a variety of positive ways to potentially challenging and threatening situations. Information on how to obtain the DVD will be available on Dieter’s website www.10seconds.co.za

Overcoming challenges has become a vital part of Dieter’s life, as he is now a C4-5 quadriplegic. In May 2002, his martial arts career came to a tragic end when he broke his neck by inadvertently diving off a houseboat into an unseen sand bank in the Oliphants River in Phalaborwa, where he was training the Special Forces Regiment. Due to his fitness he could hold his breath for four minutes under water and he points out that “luckily” he bit his tongue in the dive and it was only when the blood surfaced that people on board realised something had gone wrong.

Dieter’s thesis for women who face a potentially violent situation is that the first 10SECONDS are the most important. “You need to be decisive, you need to have a strategy and implement it with resolve. Prevention is the easiest course, with talking and trickery next. Physical resistance is always the last resort,” he says. “Most important, when the option is available, run, scream and get out of there as fast as you can and seek safety and help,” he emphasises.

From his teaching of many martial arts classes, Dieter has come to the conclusion that women in general have been brought up to be civil and ladylike and to avoid ‘making a scene’. As an example, he says: “If a woman finds that a drunk at a party is making unwanted advances it is not uncommon that she will firstly be embarrassed and then clam up hoping the situation will vanish. The pursuing scavenger sees this as weakness and will continue the pursuit. You must be direct, rude and unladylike to anybody that is trespassing within your boundaries or threatening you. It is often this misunderstanding of civility that gets targeted as weakness. You have the right to become obnoxious or weird to protect yourself.”

Women, in self-defence situations, more often than not, are reluctant to hurt anyone but they wait for the attacker and thereby end up a victim, sometimes a dead victim. Women must re-programme themselves to get rid of this negative conditioning and learn to get fighting mad when confronted by a situation where someone has invaded their personal space. “In the first place you are the victim, you did not start the problem, you owe your attacker nothing,” he asserts.

In the DVD, Dieter, together with input from a traumatologist and psychologist, provides a number of insights that women will find extremely helpful. These include assertiveness, how to avoid the outward appearance of fear, deception, the prevention principle and the problem of domestic violence. There is a fascinating segment on the use of a colour code for self defence purposes. Mentally you select a colour that is appropriate to the situation. This technique was developed in hospital emergency rooms and is helpful in thinking clearly and creatively, especially if stress is brought on by surprise.

Another useful section in the DVD deals with non-violent defence. Dieter points out that many books and courses on women’s self-defence concentrate almost exclusively on lethal defence, to kill or maim a rapist or assailant. However, women also need defence for more common situations when they are defending their honour in a parked car or in their home against a man who was merely a date until that moment. “It may even be her husband,” Dieter says. “With the aid of too many drinks he has decided to take by force what he cannot get permission to have. This may be a guy who you will see at home or the office the next day or someone who will offer an apology as soon as he is sober. Putting out his eyes, permanently destroying his manhood or clobbering him with a heavy glass ashtray is not really an option. You must have an escape plan for such a situation,” he adds.

The journey begins…

My name is Dieter Marzinger, I’m a 4′th Dan freestyle martial art instructor, in May 2002 I broke my neck in a diving accident, tragically rendering me a quadriplegic, lame in my arms and in my legs.  I thought life was over for me because being an instructor was my gift, the accolade that I had achieved in my profession was teaching the South African special Forces in hand-to-hand combat, a privilege many my senior was not able to achieve.
It took me two years to recover sufficiently from the accident, I took the scary step back into martial arts instruction, communicating with only words was a big challenge, I eventually used my senior students to help me demonstrate.  I also used video footage to explain what I wanted my students to do.  Before long I realized that the one greatest aspect of self-defense, mentality and psychology, is very seldomly taught… understandably so, it is the most difficult!
That has become my challenge, I will make the best DVD on the market and I will focus on psychology and mentality!I have succeeded in that challenge please have a look at my web site:www.10seconds.co.zaI must warn you, I have not been diplomatic in the making of the script.  It is the brutal truth of combat principals, sensitive viewers should refrain from buying this DVD.
I have decided to create this Blog in an effort to share my knowledge and expertise to anyone who needs it and is willing to listen.
I look forward to hearing from you, life is worth living!

  1. I realize that some people feel this DVD is too brutal, to hard, too foward… What do you want?

I nice romantic, Hollywood B.S version?

“It’s a bit harsh, to hurt someone like that…” Is another respons I get… Yes it is all of that, but please remember, you are being attacked with the intent to causing physical harm…if you aren’t effective you will loose… Have I made my point?!

  2. Nice Dieter – I enjoyed reading your blog and will be back for more!

  3. Hello Dieter! So glad I cam across the website! I would like to bring the training here in the Philippines where women are now getting empowered to do something about their inability to handle hold-ups, snatching of bags, and wife battering.

This is not a rich country. That is why there are only a few of us who have ventured out of the traditional martial arts BOX to help others. Please tell me how we can get this done. Thanks!

  4. Dieter,

I heard about your accident and nothing since then. It’s fantastic to hear that you are well and moving forward with your life. Many would have given up. Well done.

Keep well and all the best.

    Regards,

Greg Garland (student VIP protection course 2000)
